Construction, Design and Technology

At The Fermain Academy, Construction is a core subject in Year 9, giving students the opportunity to develop practical skills and explore a range of construction techniques. Lessons are delivered in The Mill, where students have access to specialist tools, equipment and resources. Students develop an understanding of construction processes and materials while working on practical projects in areas such as bricklaying, joinery, tiling and general construction. Alongside practical skills, students develop problem-solving, accuracy, resilience and an understanding of health and safety within a workshop environment.

In Years 10 and 11, students taking Construction as an option have the opportunity to work towards a Level 2 qualification, further developing their practical and technical skills. Students complete a range of construction projects and learn to use tools and materials safely and effectively, while developing the knowledge and skills required for further study, vocational training, apprenticeships or careers within the construction industry. The course provides students with valuable hands-on experience and an opportunity to develop confidence, independence and pride in their practical work.
