Food
At The Fermain Academy, Food is a core subject for all students from Year 9 through to Year 11, with one practical lesson each week. Our curriculum is designed to build confidence, independence and practical skills, allowing students to cook a wide range of dishes with increasing complexity as they progress. By the time they leave Fermain, every learner has developed a well-rounded skill set and a strong understanding of nutrition, food preparation and safe cooking practices.
For students in Years 10 and 11, Food is also available as an option, offering further challenge and the opportunity to achieve Level 2 qualifications in home cooking skills. This pathway allows learners to extend their technical ability, creativity and understanding, preparing them for further study, vocational training or independent living.
Our Food curriculum equips students with practical skills, knowledge of healthy eating and nutrition, and the confidence to prepare food independently, giving them the tools they need to live healthy, independent lives as they move into adulthood. It also provides a springboard to further education in food/nutrition to support a desire to work in this industry in the future.
