Reading and Oracy

At The Fermain Academy, we recognise that strong reading and communication skills are essential for students to succeed across the curriculum and beyond school. Reading is therefore developed across all subject areas, with teachers explicitly supporting students to develop vocabulary, comprehension and confidence when reading within their subjects.

Alongside this wider curriculum approach, all students have dedicated reading support lessons within their timetable. These sessions take place in our dedicated Reading Hub and provide opportunities for students to develop their reading skills and build confidence. Bespoke interventions are also provided for students who require additional support, with a focus on securing reading as a key foundational skill.

Oracy is similarly embedded across the curriculum, with all subject areas identifying opportunities within their action plans to further develop students’ speaking and listening skills. Students are encouraged to articulate their ideas, explain their thinking and communicate confidently in different contexts. Our form time debating sessions provide an additional opportunity for students to develop their ability to construct arguments, listen to different viewpoints and speak with confidence.
