Students come to The Fermain Academy for a variety of reasons, but what they often have in common is that mainstream education has not been the right environment for them to thrive or has not been able to meet their individual needs academically, personally or socially.
At Fermain, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their starting point or the challenges they may have experienced. Our staff have considerable expertise in supporting students with a wide range of needs and challenges, including SEND, gaps in learning, social and emotional needs, attendance difficulties and challenges with behaviour and engagement.
We combine high expectations with the right support to help students re-engage with education and develop the confidence to succeed. Our dedicated pastoral and SEND teams work closely with students, families and external professionals to understand individual needs and provide the right support at the right time. We place a strong emphasis on attendance, positive behaviour, wellbeing and relationships because we know that students need to feel safe, understood and valued before they can fully engage in their learning.
Our broad and ambitious curriculum provides students with a range of academic, practical and vocational opportunities. Alongside strong academic pathways and improving outcomes, students benefit from the extensive vocational provision at The Mill, where they can develop practical skills, gain meaningful qualifications and discover strengths and interests that can shape their future.
We are proud of our strong academic outcomes and, importantly, our impressive destination figures. More than 93% of our students have secured a positive destination in each of the last four years. For us, this is the ultimate measure of the success of Fermain: students leaving us with the qualifications, skills, confidence and aspirations to move successfully into further education, training or employment.
